Christmas season decorations

With the countdown to Christmas well underway, Green Supplier, at Mdawra Road, Burmarrad, is the place to go if you want to give your home a classic Nordic style festive look. One of the longest established garden centres in Malta, their friendly and enthusiastic team is led by Darren Alexander.

Darren explains “I ‘d like to think that myself and the staff go a little further when it comes to customer service. Also, as we sell wholesale, our prices are very good, and we have a loyal clientele who come back to us time and again because they are happy with both the service and the products.”

Christmas would not be Christmas without a tree and yet there is still some dispute as to where the idea came from. Sixteenth century Germany is one theory, whilst Latvia is another, but no one can deny that a beautifully decorated tree is a tradition that has come to symbolises Christmas all over the world.

With increasing concern over the environment, Darren explains, “Green Supplier is making live Christmas Trees rooted in bale, a natural and sustainable option, one of this year’s main attractions. There are two sizes available, and each is guaranteed to bring an authentic look to your home. They are proving to be popular with environmentally conscious people.”

Poinsettias, another stable of the Christmas season, are said to symbolise cheerfulness, success, and celebration. Darren explains that this December birth flower originates from Mexico. “It is an easy-care plant that likes a minimum of 6 hours of indirect sunlight a day and prefers to be in a draft free room and needs watering just once a week.” Poinsettias bring a hearty cheer to any room and there are a variety of sizes available at Green Supplier.

Finally, there is the evergreen Holly. With its spiked leaves and bright berries, it is guaranteed to bring festive cheer. Its pointed leaves are said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus, but its use predates Christianity as it was also considered a sacred plant by the Druids, Celts, and Romans. Christians traditionally believed that hanging Holly on a door would prevent persecution and that it would keep evil spirits at bay. Today, it is still used widely as a Christmas decoration. Darren explains “The berries can be slightly toxic eaten by humans, but they are an important food source to birds. We have three sizes of Holly plants available that can later be planted in a shaded area to become a hardy annual in your garden. We also have an extensive selection of indoor plants and pots to choose from.”

When a not at Green Supplier, Darren is a dog trainer, putting his experience of working with Police and Military dogs to good use in the civilian sector. He specialises in addressing behavioural issues, with the aim of helping people form better relationships with their pets. His affinity with animals also extends to several friendly cats that have made Green Supplier their home and follow him wherever he goes.
