The Phoenicia Malta – The island’s iconic hotel on the threshold of Valletta

Photography Moses Dukes Media, Philippe Schaff and Sean Mallia

Situated right outside the illustrious Maltese capital, the renowned Phoenicia Malta sits elegantly in 7½ acres of lush grounds, a vision of grandeur and aristocracy.

The hotel celebrated its 75th year in 2022 – with decades of memorable experiences for its guests – extending specialised five-star services which are updated on an ongoing basis.

The exquisitely designed rooms and suites – 132 in total – include the Superior, Executive with balcony, and Deluxe rooms, alternately offering stunning views of Valletta and its harbours as well as the Three Cities. The stylish Valletta Suites, with three balconies, and the Harbour View Suites incorporate a sitting room and a separate bedroom.

The four new Pegasus Junior Suites were fashioned in early 2022 with Michelle O’Reilly of The House Shop (THS). Their subtle design and fine craftsmanship combine modern interiors with a touch of Art Deco. The soothing neutral tones and natural materials, accentuated with hints of gold, create an uplifting and comfortable ambience for these suites with city views of Valletta.

The amenities at this elite Maltese landmark are as distinguished as the building itself.

Ornate dining options include the chic Phoenix Restaurant with its terrace boasting captivating scenes of Marsamxett Harbour, the impressive Bastion Pool Bar and Restaurant nestled between the ancient walls built by the Knights, the Palm Court Lounge in the heart of the hotel, and the Beefbar Restaurant, a well-known brand for exceptional meat dishes, as well as the recently refurbished and popular Club Bar for a refreshing drink or delicious cocktail of your choice to help you unwind.

With high ceilings, marble floors, and plenty of natural light, the event spaces at The Phoenicia Malta cater for a variety of group sizes for anyone wishing to host an important occasion or business engagement. Choose the Grand Ballroom or the Maryanski Porch – overlooking the Rotunda – for large-scale affairs. For smaller events, opt for the Knights’ Room or Green Lounges.

The busy wedding season accompanies the start of spring, with The Phoenicia Malta’s location and its gardens presenting the perfect backdrop for the numerous outdoor weddings and gala dinners hosted here. Each unique setting is sure to offer an unforgettable experience, whether it is held within the Rotunda, in the Gazebo, or at the Bastion Pool, which is ideal for sizeable events.

The Deep Nature Spa was launched in 2021, making it a significant milestone even for guests, who can now indulge in the new and improved facilities, among them a heated indoor pool, six treatment rooms, and a fully equipped gym, as well as a salt room, sauna, and steam room. The delightful ‘Sprunch’ package combines the tranquil atmosphere of the spa with the hotel’s popular weekend brunch to truly boost your Saturday or Sunday.

Now that spring is here, it is surely time to explore and enjoy the beautiful outdoor areas of the iconic hotel.

During the recent quieter months, over €1 million were invested in the enhancement of both the internal and outer areas of the hotel. The gardens were rejuvenated, with the creation of a turfed Relaxation Garden where guests can have a stroll in nature, wind down with a book under the trees, or simply sit back with the Mediterranean sun warming their face. The green lawns adjoin the hotel’s upgraded vegetable garden, which allows the chefs to collaborate with the gardeners for an exclusive ‘farm to table’ dining experience.

The Bastion Pool is a sanctuary where patrons may enjoy superb sea and city views while lazing under Valletta’s fortification walls. Guests, and now even locals, can relish a peaceful ‘Day by the Pool’, with cooling dips in the breath-taking infinity pool and alfresco dining at the adjacent restaurant.

Indulging in an outdoor massage under the palm trees is another innovative option available within the Gazebo, situated above the pool area. With glimpses of blue skies and azure waters, guests may enjoy a Deep Nature massage in the serenity of nature – only a short saunter away from their sun-lounger.

The Bastion Restaurant opens from May through September and will now cater for dinner also on weekdays to offer patrons a spectacular sunset panorama while sipping on a refreshing cocktail, followed by a delicious dinner in this gorgeous venue.

Take a gentle evening stroll through the landscaped gardens after dining, and enjoy the newly upgraded garden lighting, with the carefully planned uplighting of specific trees. This project was designed by Franck Franjou and installed by Brighter Solutions Limited within the hotel grounds and pool area. The specially designed lighting poles at the Bastion Pool – manufactured in Italy – blend in to ensure unobstructed views and provide fabulous lighting for the multiple events held here over the spring and summer months.

The Phoenicia Malta’s General Manager, Robyn Pratt, is well aware of the effect this majestic hotel has on all its patrons.

“Almost everyone in Malta can remember celebrating a relative’s or close friend’s personal event here at The Phoenicia Malta. I think this plays a major role in the remarkable energy I sense when I wander through the hotel and its gardens. So many people have created wonderful and long-lasting memories here.”

“Social gatherings are a frequent occurrence, whether it is an afternoon tea in the Palm Court Lounge, a special occasion at the Phoenix Restaurant or in one of our event spaces, or a mini-break to commemorate a birthday or anniversary. During our daily briefing, it is always a pleasure for me and my staff to be responsible for organising the celebration of a specific milestone for one of our guests.”

The Phoenicia Malta is proudly listed as the only Maltese member of The Leading Hotels of the World, a truly well-deserved endorsement!

With a team of professional personnel of over 30 different nationalities, anyone staying here is guaranteed the optimum level of satisfaction. The hotel’s supreme amenities, ideal location, luxurious surroundings, relaxing gardens and outdoor leisure facilities, and exceptional and personalised hospitality are the reasons guests return year after year to stay at Malta’s most outstanding hotel.
